Week7 – Information Coming

Most of you will be running in Hyannis next week. Good Luck to all of you. I will be running in Naples, FL. That means I won’t be organizing the run. I’ve asked Nick to, and I ask anyone planning on running to offer your help for water stops. Comment to this message to work out the details.

Nick, Lois and Nancy have the water stop supplies (I think). Both are running Hyannis though, so if you are running Tuesday night you can pick them up from them then. If not, I’m sure you’ll figure something out.

See you all in a few weeks,
Jim

Hyannis and here in Melrose Sunday 2/24. Dry run and nw flow. I didnt look at temps. The reason i posted here… many in our group will be hearing of a modest snow event late Friday. No matter what accumulates… my impression roads will be dry for Sundays run…hopefully plowed back to the curb and no, this is not a blockbuster Friday evening event… a routine pleasant-welcomed New England winter snow (in winter). Early ‘guess’, presuming its all snow and depending on location in the snow shield… suspect a solid 4-8. its early and track can change, resulting in changes but this is a broad perspective. Think it will be a good sleigh riding weekend.

    Thanks Walt!
Helpful to know as we anticipate our respective runs/races.
Hopefully the Friday snow will still be pretty to look at on Sunday.

With Jim sunnying himself & the family in Florida & most of our regular Sunday AM crew running the Hyannis Half, I have been given the reins for this Sunday’s AM Long Run!

So in the immortal words of Al Haig “I’m in Charge Here!” Lois & Nancy have provided me with the Water Stop goodies & I will replenish the Snickers supply & Gatorade. The universal Water Stop for both the 14.2 & 7.0 mile runs will be at mile 4 at the corner of Main & South Streets in Stoneham (Usually inside the Friendly’s parking lot!)

I think I will park my car there & run back to Breugger’s to avoid the need for a shuttle! Hope everyone who wants to run can make it & that the Friday/Saturday snow storm does not adversely impact us. Check back for further updates!

The prior outlook continues on target. Am expecting 2-4″ of snow at HYA before rain and above freezing temps compact this slushy mess. Saturday after daybreak..it may end as an inch of snow. It freezes solid Sunday night. HYA 10am run time i think is in the 30-33F neighborhood with a North or NW wind of 10 MPH. there may be some cloudiness but there “should” be LOTS of sunshine. I think these are good winter run conditions.

The plan…pls go to Jims link listed at the beginning of this lr season for what to wear.

Plan for a 30sF run. some snowmelt slush in non shaded roads. wind not a major factor…n-w 10-15 MPH and this is VERY good for HYA. If its a factor its from roughly just beyond mile 3 when we turn west, to mile 9.5… if you’ve run well to this point…, the wind probably at our back will be an aid in your strong last 3 mile finish for a pr.

For now, i plan to run in thin winter wool socks, tights and probably a short sleeve shirt with a windbreaker, finger gloves (not as warm as mittens but probably wont need hands to be as warm) and maybe sunglasses as reflectivity will be high if the expected leftover 1-2″ of compacted snow, and decent sunshine forecast is correct.

Melrose 5-8″ is the probable range… if sleet mixes in, then lower end of this range. The worst case would be about 13″ and thats only a 5 pct probability. There should be snowfall rates of 1/hr for 2 or 3 pulses Friday night and Sat morning, Then it should be all done late Sat aftn…the worst between 6P Fri and 6A Sat.

Any substantial changes, I will update…otherwise please consider this update as supporting the prior initial issuance earlier this week in comments above and confidence in verifying both HYA and Melrose, continues above average.

I’ll be there. Looking forward to a post vacation week run; somewhere in the 10+ range.

Since this is Jim Carson’s blog, I cannot access it for headings etc. for the recap so I will leave this week’s recap as a reply. Perhaps Jim can modify it when he returns.

    Week 7 Recap!

Picturesque! That was the least that you say about this morning’s long run! Snow covered homes, snow covered evergreens, trees and of course snow covered sidewalks! Melrose and Stoneham never looked prettier!

Although it was bright, sunny with little to no wind the temperature at the beginning of the run was 19 degrees. Thirteen club members showed up this morning to run varying distances. Judy C., Kelley, Erin & Andrew Pate for the full 14.2 miles, Ed Morris, Donna Leggerio, Joanne D., Evan Zahner and Katerine Kane for the 7.2 run and Molly, Peter, Ginny & Matt for something in between and yours truly providing the rolling water stops.

There was much discussion before the run as to what street was Franklin however everyone took the correct left turn on Franklin with Judy, Kelley, & Erin leading the run and a tardy Katherine Kane catching the last group of runners. Up Franklin to Main St. in Stoneham and down to Friendly’s for the first water stop.

Tempted with goodies ranging from snickers to munchkins, water to G2 the lead group departed with partaking only in water as today’s “tweener” Andrew Pate rolled in, followed by Peter, Molly, Evan, Ginny & Joanne. Katherine, Donna, Matt & Ed rounded off the first water stop.

Today’s long run called for running the backside of Spot Pond, a left onto Elm St and a right at the Mobile Station onto Highland Ave to Water Stop #2 then to the Fellsway. The short run followed South St. down Pond St. to the Fells back to Breuggers.

Of course this is where the fun started. The lead pack of women led by Columbus, Ohio native Kelley, newbie (Erin) and Judy Chiavetta on AutoPolit embarked on an excursion that I still cannot figure out. No longer the “tweener,” Pate arrived first at the second water stop followed by Peter, Ginny & Molly who reined in the missing trio at the MDC skating ring!

With the long run group finished at the water stop and off to the Fellsway back to Friendly’s they were followed by Peter, Molly & Ginny who turn at Grimsbys and returned to Breugger’s for a 10 plus mile run. Meantime, Matt decided to run a little longer as I raced back & forth around Spot Pond looking to him with a final water stop before heading off to Friendly’s. Sorry, Matt, Ce La Vie!

Back at Breugger’s everyone was all accounted for as the temperature finally reached 30 degrees. Best of luck to everyone who ran Hyannis today, we cannot wait to hear your race day stories.

RECAP FROM THE HYANNIS HALF MARATHON!

Wow – so much to tell you – WHAT A GREAT RACE DAY! Nick, Pate, Judi, Barry, Kelley, Ginny, Peter, Molly, Matt, Julie, Kaj, Brian, Donna, Denyce, Jen, Joanne, Erin, Evan, Jim and Liz, (and anyone who I didn’t mention who frequents our Sunday long runs) we missed you all in Hyannis.

It couldn’t have been a better day for a half marathon. Amazing. It wasn’t terribly cold, there was barely any wind and the sun was shining down on us all. Walt hit it right on the head with his forecast. Despite the forecast, some of us spent way too much time trying to decide what to wear – hat, no hat, pants, shorts, another shirt…

Thanks to Rick, most of us had a room to hang out in (sorry Walt we didn’t get the message to you in the morning). Thanks so much Rick. I think we were all happy to have a place to let out all our pre-race anxieties (well maybe not all of us) and not have to wait in any of the long, long restroom lines.

The race was not uneventful. Although we all spread out into our respective places on the course, we all came back with stories. Some of us admired the scenery, others of us were fairly focused about two steps ahead of ourselves on the road. Sue saw some road kill – an animal that starts with the letter ‘P’, not sure which one though. And, it wouldn’t be an interesting race without a major ‘wardrobe malfunction’ for one of us – name and details will not be shared, but it was fairly unbelieveable, believe me.

Everyone did a great job today getting to the finish line. After all was said and done, smiles all around. We even ran into a few former MRCers, Leanne and Lauren, and spent a few mintues catching up. And thanks to Linda Ford and family for some cheers along the course. Hope Linda’s bro-in-law had a wonderful marathon.

Post race lunch was interesting as well. Again, Walt, we couldnt’ find you!!
But lunch provided much contrast with the faster runners being at one end of the table and the back-of-the-packers at the other end. Let’s just say one end all ordered dessert and the other didn’t. Hmm… I wonder if that is one of the secrets of the swift – no dessert. Rick – just so you know I’m swearing off dessert for the year to test out the theory.

The race was great all around. It was nice to see some other scenery (for those that looked around). And, of course, results are proof that Sunday long runs are making us all stronger.

    Good times!
